About MASS

MASS is an independent UK systems house with a strong defence market focus. The company is based near St Neots in Cambridgeshire with a second facility in Lincoln.

MASS currently employs around 135 permanent staff and 15 associates. The company has built a reputation for high levels of flexibility and support, timely delivery and technical excellence.

Services

MASS offers specialist services in three main business areas:

  • Electronic warfare

  • Specialist managed services

  • Electronic systems design, development and manufacture

In addition, MASS offers re-design and support of older in-service systems; plus technical and operational advisory services across all three business areas.

The ability to assemble multi-disciplined teams covering both operational and engineering design disciplines sets MASS apart from many other systems houses. MASS has specific experience in managing and providing services in highly secure areas of government and industry.

Background

MASS was formed in 1983 by four partners who, as colleagues at BAe Dynamics in Stevenage, saw the opportunity to supply mathematical and associated scientific services (the origin of the MASS acronym) into the UK defence industry. Initially based in Welwyn Garden City, MASS soon moved to its present offices in a Georgian farmhouse in Little Paxton, St Neots.

By 2006/7, the year MASS became part of the Cohort group, the company's annual turnover had grown to over £14m. This was helped by winning a number of prestigious managed IT contracts in highly secure areas of MOD business – contracts which continue today and have recently been renewed. From its roots in mathematical modelling and its understanding of high security networking, MASS has built a significant business in providing these specialist managed services. These generally include an element of secure IT but also cover a diversity of specialist technical defence expertise and other ancillary activities such as facilities management.

At the same time, MASS developed its skills in real-time software, electronics systems design, development and low volume manufacture – particularly in distributed and secure communications for the aerospace sector. MASS also provides a successful contract R&D capability across both defence and commercial market sectors. MASS has developed a reputation for successfully undertaking technically demanding projects in very short timescales.

Electronic Warfare has become an important area of specialisation for MASS, and one in which it has unique capabilities in the UK. MASS played a key role in the development of the EW Test Facility at BAE Systems Warton and from this has developed unique skills and products in EW test & evaluation. A substantial team of MASS people provide on-site support to operational EW activities at the UK's Air Warfare centre. More recently, MASS's facility in Lincoln has become the centre for its growing EW Operational Support capability, providing services for both UK and overseas customers.
